Heltec V2
The earlier generation Heltec board. Still compatible with MeshCore but outpaced by newer hardware offering substantial improvements.
Important: 915 MHz for United States
Always buy the 915 MHz version for use in the United States. The 868 MHz version (Europe) is not legal in America.
About The Heltec V2
The Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V2 served mesh networking enthusiasts faithfully for many years. Constructed around an ESP32 processor combined with the SX1276 LoRa transceiver, it established a dependable platform for neighborhood communication projects.
Heltec has discontinued manufacturing this board. While your existing V2 units function perfectly with MeshCore firmware, anyone purchasing new hardware should target the V3 or V4 models which deliver meaningful advances in power efficiency and overall capability.
Recommendation: Continue using your V2 if you already own one. For new purchases, proceed directly to the V3 or V4.

Why The V2 Has Been Retired
For years the V2 represented a sensible choice for Meshtastic and MeshCore builds. Comprehensive documentation exists and the community accumulated considerable hands-on experience with this hardware.
However, the V2 reveals its age in two key areas. Sleep current consumption of roughly 800 microamps compares unfavorably to sub-10 microamp figures from the V3. The SX1276 LoRa chip delivers inferior sensitivity compared to the SX1262 found in current boards. Micro USB has also yielded to USB-C.
Your existing V2 boards remain fully capable MeshCore devices. Firmware updates continue arriving. For fresh deployments, however, the capability gap makes the V3 or V4 the obvious preference.
Purchasing Options
The V2 is no longer in production. Fresh stock remains unavailable. Consider the Heltec V3 or V4 for new acquisitions.
