Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers about RegionMesh and getting connected
What is RegionMesh?
RegionMesh is a community-driven mesh radio network across the United States. Using MeshCore technology and LoRa radios, we enable communication without internet, cellular networks, or any central infrastructure. Messages hop from device to device across the network.
How does mesh networking work?
Each device in the network can receive and forward messages to other devices. When you send a message, it travels through multiple devices (hops) until it reaches its destination. This creates a resilient network with no single point of failure.
What hardware do I need?
You need a LoRa radio device that supports MeshCore firmware. Popular options include the Heltec LoRa 32 V3 ($65-85), LilyGo T-Deck Plus ($100-140), or T-Beam Supreme ($90-115). All devices must operate on 915 MHz for use in the US.
How much does it cost?
Hardware costs between $45-150 depending on features. There are no monthly fees, subscriptions, or ongoing costs. Once you have a device, communication is completely free forever.
What is the range of these devices?
Direct line-of-sight range can reach 10+ kilometers. However, the real power is in the mesh network - messages hop through repeaters and other devices, potentially covering hundreds of miles across the network.
Do I need a license to operate?
No license is required for LoRa devices operating on 915 MHz in the United States. These operate in the ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) band which is license-free.
Is my communication private?
Yes. Private messages use end-to-end encryption. Only you and your intended recipient can read the messages. Public channel messages are visible to all network participants.
How do I get started?
Purchase a compatible LoRa device (we recommend the Heltec V3 for beginners), install the MeshCore firmware using the web installer, and connect via Bluetooth to your smartphone. The getting started guide walks through the same process step by step.
What is a repeater?
A repeater is a device placed in a good location (high elevation, clear line of sight) that automatically forwards messages to extend network coverage. Any MeshCore device can function as a repeater.
Can I use this without a smartphone?
Yes! Devices with screens like the T-Deck Plus or Heltec V3 can operate completely standalone. You can read and send messages directly on the device without any phone connection.
How long does the battery last?
Battery life varies by device and usage. Typical devices last 3-7 days on a single charge. E-ink devices like the T-Echo can last 7-14 days. Devices can be charged via USB-C, power bank, or solar panel.
Is RegionMesh active in my area?
Coverage varies by location and depends on community participation. Check our network map to see current coverage. Even without existing coverage, you can start a local network with family, neighbors, or friends.
